Horticulture

Horticulture department in the district, with headquarters at Santirbazar of Belonia Sub-Division, is headed by a Horticulturist and assisted by one Assistant Director. The activities of the department are implemented through the infrastructure of 6 Superintendent of Agriculture at Matabari, Amarpur, Bagafa, Rajnagar, Satchand and Rupaichari.

The State Agriculture Department projects like seedling production for orchards, collection of seeds for seedlings, expansion of orchards, non-seasonal vegetable cultivation, assistance for betel vine, mushroom spawn distribution, assistance to co-operatives and organic farming is being executed throughout the district and Rs. 23.11 lakhs have been spent on the same.

The department could make significant progress in 2002-03 under the Technology Mission. Horticulture has been expanded to 120 Ha of land at the expense of 15.62 lakhs of rupees. Cultivation of different vegetables, spices, commercial-floriculture and water-body creation could be achieved over 146 Ha, 60.5 Ha, 28 Ha and 6 Ha respectively utilising 18.98, 7.87, 3.64 and 4.25 lakhs of rupees.

298 intra state training could be organised along with 50 outside the state training at the cost of 4.47 and 1.25 lakhs of rupees. 23 Ha have been brought under Organic Farming utilising Rs. 2.5 lakhs. 67 hand-operated, 12 electrical and 33 power-tiller have been distributed at the cost of total Rs.20.5 lakhs.

Under the Technology Mission, hybrid vegetable seeds like cabbage, cauliflower, tomato, brinjal, onion, TPS potato, chili and capsicum have also been distributed to the tune of 7.12 Kg, 3 Kg, 7.37 Kg, 8.32 Kg, 5 Kg, 1.85 Kg, 18.25 Kg and 1.5 Kg respectively. The same has been planted over 28.5 Ha, 12 Ha, 32 Ha, 10.5 Ha, 1 Ha, 1 Ha, 18.5 Ha, 26 Ha and 4 Ha respectively.

Distribution of potato seeds in 2002-03 has been significant. 357.61 MT of Khoprijyoti, 66.73 MT of TPS and 46.84 MT of TPS Tuberlet has been distributed to cover potato plantation over 175 Ha, 667 Ha and 58.55 Ha respectively.

Under the Kharif Abhiyan 2002-03, the department has lifted/ distributed planting materials like Coconut, Arecanut, Litchi, Mangoe (Amrapalli), Orange, Black Pepper cutting, Papaya and Jackfruit to the quantum of 34383, 228876, 17093, 23047, 33790, 41400, 7655 and 22500 respectively.

Seedling like Cashew-nut grafts, Betelvine cutting, Assam lemon, Sapota, Cinnamon, Pumelo, Musambi, Lime, Banana have also been distributed to the tune of 7000, 257300, 19900, 1745, 10315, 160, 10, 716 and 10050 respectively. 918 Kgs of Cashew-nut seed have also been distributed. The department could realise revenue of Rs.3881058 after distribution of seedlings from the Kharif Abhijan.

For the year 2003-04, the department has set a target of 30 Ha for Orange and Pineapple, 5 Ha for Banana, 25 Ha for Cashewnut, 40 Ha for Coconut and 20 Ha for Arecanut respectively. 25 Ha of the land has been targeted for Litchi, while Mango (A/P), Ginger, BP Cutting, Capsicum/ Chili, Betelvine, TPS to Tuberlet, Summer Cabbage, Summer Cauliflower, Papaya and Jackfruit have been targeted at 5 Ha, 5 Ha, 50 Ha, 5 Ha, 2 Ha, 50 Ha, 30 Ha, 30 Ha, 2 Ha, and 5 Ha respectively.

The department aims to expand Floriculture and promotion of TPM to 3 Ha and 30 Ha respectively. It has also been targeted to create 20 Community Tank, 3 Vermi Compost Unit, 1 Nursery and also distribute 50 Garden Toolkit, 60 Power-Tiller and 24 Tube/ Bore well through out the district. The department intends to arrange 500 intra-state training and 30 outside the state training for the beneficiaries.
